A symbol is a representation of a complete and fully identifiable trading item.  A complete symbol for a stock is simply its ticker symbol.  A complete symbol for a futures contract consists of a root symbol (i.e. ES) and an expiration date.  While an option symbol would consist of a root symbol, strike price, contract type (put or call) and expiration date.

Symbols are grouped into Watchlists.  These groupings can be used to collect live data, backtest as a complete portfolio or run live systems.
